Three days before Christmas there passed away in the full ripeness of her years, Lucy Sarah Gilliland, a most well-beloved woman.
She was born in Hereford, England, and was the daughter of Edwin Goode Wright of that city. Her mother, formerly Elizabeth Hobye, was a direct descendant of Sir Philip Hobye, guardian to Queen Elizabeth when a child.
Mrs. Gilliland continued to maker her home in Hereford after her marriage to Dr. W.L. Gilliland, of whom it is said at his death "one of the best known and best beloved men in three counties has passed away."
Over a quarter of a century ago Mrs. Gilliland came out to California with her family, intending to stay a few months, but falling in love with the Benedict place on Magnolia avenue, she purchased it, and i has ever since been the family home.
Mrs. Gilliland was a devout member of All Saints' Episcopal church, and all who knew her loved her for her kindness and faithfulness. Kind to all, rich and poor, keeping up the ready hospitality of the old-time English gentlewoman, her house was always a home where you were sure of a warm welcome, and of the little courteous parting at the door which all who knew her will remember.
None who ever were in trouble came to Mrs. Gilliland and went away empty, and all her life whe worked to alleviate suffering, nursing the sick, and comforting those who mourned.
Mrs. Gilliland's passion was for flowers, all her life long she loved them, and worked among them, and on Thursday when she lay so peacefully amongst all the wonderful blossoms sent to her by loving friends, it seemed to those who loved her so well that she was sleeping among the earthly flowers to awake among the heavenly ones.
Mrs. Gilliland is survived by all of her five children, Mrs. Franklin J. Hall of La Jolla, Mrs. Elijah Impey Scarbougr of Tiegnmouth, Devon, England, Mrs. Robert Lee Bettner, Grace Letta Gilliland and Edwin J. Gilliland of Riverside.
