THE DEATH OF EMMA S. LUCAS
LUCAS DEATH RECALLS A PIONEER OPERATION
Mrs. Emma (Wright) Lucas, a native of Tippecanoe county who died September 13 in Dallas, Tx., is said to have been the first woman to have undergone a Caesarian operation. Mrs. Lucas, 86, years old at the time of her death, was born May 3 1846, near Clark’s Hill. She was the wife of Luther Lucas, who died several years ago and is buried in Salem cemetery, near here. Since his death she had been living with a son, Garfield Lucas, at Dallas, where she died. She died while seated in a chair, reading her Sunday school paper. Burial was made at Dallas. It was while the family lived three miles of Stockwell that Mrs. Lucas underwent the Caesarian operation. Dr. Moses Baker, of Stockwell, was called. With the life of the mother and yet unborn child both nearly despaired of, Dr. Baker performed an operation delivering the baby. Both mother and child thrived, the former living until she was 86 and the later being the son at whose home she died.
