Sarah G. "Gen" Reed, age 102 of Jesup and formerly of Independence, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

She was born September 1, 1906 in Nashua, Iowa the daughter of William R. and Susan (Bullen) Wright. She graduated from Independence High School. She was united in marriage with Frank B. Reed on June 7, 1938 in Independence. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1962.

Gen worked as a bookkeeper at Leytze Furniture in Independence for 42 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jesup, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Independence Garden Club.

Survivors include two step-daughters, Marcella Nelson of Des Moines and Shirley King of Hot Springs, AR.; several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a step daughter, Arda Hawk; and two brothers, Gilbert and Chester Wright.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Jesup with inurnment in Cedar Crest Cemetery in Jesup. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Church. The Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel in Waterloo is in charge of the arrangements.
