Dr. Nina J. Gates Ph.D.

GATES, PhD, Dr. Nina J. was called by God to come home Sunday morning February 5, 2012. Born July 27, 1947 in Beckley, WV the second child of William and Zelma Wright. She was active in 4H and many other school and community activities. She graduated from Stratton H.S. in 1965, and was named Miss Debutante in 1965 at the Debutante Cotillion in Beckley. She entered Nursing School at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Harlan, KY completing her studies in the summer 1968 receiving a diploma as a Registered Nurse (RN). She was a licensed Nursing Home Administrator in Ohio and Texas and earned her College Nursing Certification from ANA. Nina began her nursing career as a Staff Nurse at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus, OH until relocating to Dayton in 1969, working at Miami Valley Hospital as a staff Nurse. Soon after, she met Charles Gates and sparks immediately occurred between the two. Nina & Charles married in September 1969 from which came two children. Nina worked as a Nurse Supervisor, Manager and Director at Good Samaritan Hospital and St. David's Medical Center in Austin, TX. She also worked for the Dayton Public School System as a School Nurse and later, a Nurse Instructor in the Nursing Vocational program. She began her service at the University of Texas in 1991 as Director of Nursing, Student Health Services. Nina, along with other management staff, coordinated the planning, design and layout of the new Student Health facilities, once open it became the University Health Services Department/Building. Nina remained in this position until her retirement in 2004. Nina earned degrees from the following: B.S. Health Education, Central State University; M.A. Health Care Administration, Central Mich. University; M.S. Nursing, University Texas at Austin; and a PhD in Business Administration- Health Care Administration, Fredrick Taylor International University. Nina received many awards, was listed in Who's Who, former board member Texas Nurses Association, Austin Planned Parenthood and American College Health Association's International Board in Washington, D.C. At an early age Nina became very active in church at North Beckley Baptist, and later, Wayman AME and Metropolitan AME. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Town Lake Links, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority and Jack and Jill. Nina loved to travel, dress for success, music, swimming and playing the piano. Preceded in death by her father, William; sister-in-law, Mary E. Shyne. She is survived by her husband, Charles; son, Charles Jr. (Janece); daughter, Stephanie; grandchildren, Stephon, Milan, Malaysia, Charese & Madison; mother, Zelma of Beckley; sisters, Dorothy Jordan (Harrison) of Virginia & Sharon Diggs (Hugo); brothers- in-law, Theodore (Veronica) Gates & Rev. O'Neal Shyne Sr., all of Ohio; a host of other relatives and friends throughout the U.S. via her interaction with people in the medical, educational and aviation fields, who were impressed with her friendliness and welcoming positive attitude. Your suffering is over, rest in peace. Funeral service will be held 1 pm Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church, 3317 Hoover Ave. Interment Woodland Cemetery. Visitation 12 pm Wednesday at the church at which time family will receive friends. Arrangements entrusted to the HOUSE OF WHEAT Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 N. Gettysburg Ave. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made in Nina's name to: The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation or The Association for FronToTemporal Degeneration.
