Elinor Wortley Doty, beloved mother, died on November 29, 2007.
She was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 8, 1910, to Florence Dutton and Charles Bruce Wortley and grew up in Walkerville, Ontario, Canada.
She graduated from the University of Michigan, where she studied organ and met her future husband, Ezra William Doty. In 1938, when her husband was appointed dean of the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas, she moved to Austin. During her husband's long career at the university, she remained his most stalwart and enthusiastic supporter, and his cherished confidant. She attended All Saints Episcopal Church, where she served as organist and helped found the day school; and she volunteered for the American Red Cross. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, the English Speaking Union, and the Open Forum Club. In retirement, she enjoyed summers spent in Colorado where she indulged a newly found interest in geology.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Doty Killam and husband Allen P. Killam of Durham, North Carolina; son, William Wortley Doty of Albuquerque, New Mexico; daughter, Martha Doty Freeman and husband Joe C. Freeman of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
