Varine "Hippie" Workman Davis, 76, wife of James B. Davis Sr., entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence, after a sudden illness.

Born July 8, 1935, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Lucille Dinkins Workman. Mrs. Davis confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour at an early age and became a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, Rembert.

After marriage, she became a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and later transitioned to Greater Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, where she settled under the leadership of Pastor Marvin Hodge. Mrs. Davis loved to go to church and loved to praise the Lord. She enjoyed listening to gospel music. She loved to have fun and make people laugh. "Hippie," as she was affectionately called, worked at Ebenezer High School in food service and at Georgia Pacific Co. during her earlier years.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: six children, Arthur (Geneva) Davis of Dalzell, Corine (Edward) Mays of Atlanta, Ga., Ernestine (Theodore) Portee of Rembert, Naomi Mickens of Rembert, James Davis Jr. of Sumter and Annie Mae Davis of Dalzell; a granddaughter she raised in her home, Angielica Davis of Dalzell; five sisters, Gussie Workman, Laura Dinkins, Lurine Sanders (her twin) and Kathryn Mitchell, all of Rembert, and Margaret Davis of Mitchellville, Md.; four brothers, Jessie, Dosie and James Workman of Newark, N.J., and Hilliard Workman of Rembert; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two aunts, Millie Kirkland and Edmonia Wade; two uncles, Edgar and Paul Dinkins; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Hodge Workman; and a sister, Lee Bertha Workman.

Funeral services: Greater Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, 609 Miller Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Marvin Hodge, pastor, eulogist, the Rev. Melvin Mack, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Freddie Davis of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Washington, D.C., Minister Wanda Martin, Minister Brenda Rothwel and Pastor Marie Sanders.

Burial: Greater Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church cemetery, Rembert.
