Birth: Jan. 19, 1798
Worcester County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Apr. 20, 1859
Oklahoma, USA

Preacher, printer, publisher, editor, translator, scholar of the Cherokee language, spent years making the Cherokee language into print type; founder of the Worcester Mission in Park Hill, Cherokee Nation, IT. Known as "The Messenger" among the Cherokee Indians; while studying in New England, met Elias Boudinot who influenced him to move to Brainerd Mission in TN, to administer to the Cherokee Indians. After arriving there besides preaching, was a blacksmith, carpenter and carpenter, translator, and doctor. Secured funds to establish the "Cherokee Phoenix," the first Cherokee newspaper in 1828 at New Echota, GA. Served time in prison in GA, because of signing and publishing a resolution at New Echota in protest of a law the assembly had passed requiring all whites to get a license to work in the Cherokee Nation. Sued the State of GA at the US Supreme Court as unconstitutionally violating the Cherokee Nation rights and won his case in 1832 with Chief Justice Marshall presiding; however, Pres. Andrew Jackson did not honor the Court's ruling. Moved to Cherokee Nation West in 1835 to prepare for the coming of the Cherokee on the "Trail of Tears." Worked tirelessly to help resolve the differences between the GA Cherokee (Chief John Ross faction) and the "Old Settlers."
