Birth: May 29, 1908
Sanborn County
South Dakota, USA
Death: May 30, 2005

ESTHER SHINGLEDECKER Passed away in her sleep after celebrating her 97th birthday. True to form, although she didn't eat a big birthday dinner she made sure to eat her favorite dessert. She was born in 1908 in Woonsocket, South Dakota, and graduated from High School in Pierre, S.D. She married and raised her family in Sioux Falls, S.D., and moved to Hayward, Calif., in 1972 and then to Mill Valley, Calif., in 2003 to live with her daughter. A few weeks ago she went to live with her grandson Scott Miller and companion Stephanie Melville in Dillon Beach. She was an avid bridge player, expert knitter and above all a devoted wife, mother, and (great) grandmother. She spent her last days living in Dillon Beach next to a huge window with a view of the Pacific Ocean where she gave regular reports on the campers and beach-goers driving by. She is survived by her daughter Jane Miller and daughter-in-law Donna Shingledecker, as well as grandchildren Kathy Lyles, Tom Shingledecker, Dan Shingledecker, Patty Ann Shingledecker, Janie Bristol, Stacy Miller, Julie Shingledecker and Scott Miller. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Jamie Shingledecker, Heather, April and James Lyles, Ryan and Taylor Shingledecker and Madison, Kelsey and Cameron Bristol. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Shingledecker, sister Iva Conklin, brother Harold Woodmansee and son Richard Shingledecker. She had a long, wonderful life and touched many with her hand-knit Christmas stockings and ornaments, sweaters and signature cookie recipe for "carmelitas." She did not want a service but rather asked her loved ones to, "just let all our good times be my memorial." Memorial gifts in Esther's name can be made to Northern California Chapter of Huntington's Disease Society 7485 Rush River Drive, Suite 710, Sacramento, CA 95831, or Hospice of Marin.
