Cawker City Public Record
- DIED--December 30th 1891, at his
late residence in this city, Wilbur Wood-
mansee, in the 44th year of his age.
The deceased was born January 1st,
1848, in New Lexington, Ohio. He
arrived in Cawker City November 20th
1871, and engaged in the general mer-
chandise business under the firm name
of Bell & Woodmansee in the stone
building erected by the Masons and
Odd Fellows and later known as the
"Tribune Building." He continued in
business only one year and then enter-
ed the services of Alex Parker in the
old cottonwood building which stood
on the site of the present St. Joe Store,
continuing with Mr. Parker in the new
building until the retirement of his em-
ployer from business, when he engaged
with W. Wheeler in the same building,
afterwards becoming a partner in the
business which he conducted up to the
time of his death. The deceased was
strictly honest and upright in his deal-
ing with his fellow men, extremely in-
dustrious and attentive to business and
could not be prevailed on to relinquish
in failing health, and even up to a day
or two before his death was at his post
in the St. Joe Store where he had toiled
and for twenty years. He held the respect
and esteem of everyone with whom he
came in contact and will be remembered
by many of the early settlers of north-
western Kansas, who in frontier times
came scores of miles to trade in the
house from which he has just been re-
moved. A truly good man has depart-
ed from the community in which his
presence and example in an unassum-
ing manner has exerted an influence
for good. His brethren of the A. O.
U. W. Lodge took charge of the serv-
ices at this late residence and escorted
the remains to the depot, the widow and
daughter accompanying them to the
home of his parents at New Lexington,
