Kathryn L Wood Baxter passed away Nov 26, 2011, at Golden Living Care Center in Spring Hill, KS.
Kathryn was born Feb 15, 1913, in Jamestown, a daughter of the late Jeriah Orestus and Dora Elizabeth (Knorp) Wood. In Oct of 1933, in Smithton, she married Walter H "Pete" Baxter. Pete preceded her in death in May of 1984 at the age of 73.
In her early years, she lived in Clifton City and Smithton, where she graduated from high school at the age of 16. She attended Missouri Valley College in Marshall. Music played a very important role in her life. She was an accomplished piano player and gave music lessons when she was younger. She also played piano for the Smithton Methodist Church.
Kathryn was active in the operation of the family farm and worked for the Smithton post office until she retired Jul 30, 1975. Kathryn was a member of the Clifton City Methodist Church as a child and moved her membership to the Smithton Methodist Church during her adult years. After moving to Brooking Park, she joined First Christian Church in Sedalia.
In the early years of Pete and Kate's retirement, they took many bus tours to various locations in the USA. They also spent the winter months in Phoenix, AZ, where they owned a second home until the time of Pete's death. Kathryn continued to go to Arizona for the winter months until she purchased a home in Brooking Park Village in 1991. She lived in this home until Aug of 2010 when she went to live at the Golden Living Care Center in Spring Hill, KS, so that she could be close to her son and his family.
