Shirley May Alexander, 79 of Queen City passed away early Sunday morning October 2, 2011 in Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirsville where she had been a patient five days.
The daughter of Raymond and Juanita(Mott)Wood, she was born May 17, 1932 at La Plata, MO. On February 28, 1951 she was united in marriage to R.E. Alexander, who preceded her in death on March 7, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Shirley is survived by one son, Randy Alexander and wife Wynette of Queen City; one daughter, Carol Ann Salsberry and husband Billy of Queen City; one granddaughter, Kimberly Hatton and husband Christopher of Queen City; three sisters, Loretta Waddle and husband Chuck of Kansas City, MO, Darlene Sullivan of Independence, MO, and Charlene Wood of Belton, MO; and one aunt, Opal Bents of Dumont, IA: two brothers-in-law, K.W. Alexander and wife Doris of Queen City and Paul Alexander and wife Janette of Hot Springs, AR and nieces and nephews.
Shirley grew up in the rural Atlanta and La Plata area and graduated from the Atlanta High School in 1949. Following her marriage they moved to the Alexander family farm east of Queen City where she lived until failing health made it necessary for her to move to the Schuyler County Nursing Home in December of 2005.
Shirley owned her own Beauty Shop for several years. She also drove a school bus for the Kirksville schools and Schuyler County R-1 for several years. She was a secretary for Dr. Stanley Bohon for a time and also worked for Hollisters. She was an over 50 year member of Kirksville Chapter #184 O.E.S.
Shirley enjoyed bowling and was secretary of many of the leagues. She was inducted into the Kirksville Area Bowling Hall of Fame in 2000. She and R.E. enjoyed camping and were members of No-Mo Bulldogs, Good Sams. They were also honored for their work with the Queen City Pioneers Association. Shirley enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, cooking, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Funeral service will be Held at 1 pm Wednesday October 5, 2011 in the Dooley Funeral Home with Pastor Sonny Smyser officiating. Taped selection of "Go Rest High on That Mountain" by Vince Gill and "When I Get Where I'm Going" by Brad Pasley. Interment will be in the Queen City Cemtery.
Pallbearers will be Randy Johns, Charles Rhoads, Mike Rigdon, Kenny Spray, Leon Garrison, and Ron Mc Elhinney. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr.Rick Minter, Marvin Miller, Eddie Berry, Sam Western, Bill Frazee, and Charles Rigdon. Visitation will be after 2:30 pm Tuesday October 4, 2011 with the family receiving friends from 6-8 pm in the Dooley Funeral Home, Queen City, MO. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure.
