On August 24, 2013, Violet Chan died peacefully at home surrounded by family after a brief battle with cancer. She will be sorely missed by the numerous family and friends whose lives she's touched with her undying love and generosity over the course of her 79 years.

Born in a village in China's Toisan Province to Philip and Nancy Wong, Vi came to the U.S. as a young girl and grew up in Oakland and Lodi. While in Lodi, she worked in her family's restaurant business, graduated from Lodi Union High School, worked as a bookkeeper and obtained an Associate's Degree from Stockton College. In 1957, she married her beloved husband, Charlie, settled in Stockton, raised a family and was a long-time employee of the Stockton Unified School District.

Besides being the Matriarch of a large and extended family, over the years Vi developed a vast number of deep friendships which she maintained until her passing. Whether through her children's school activities, involvement with Chinese or other community groups, her work at SUSD, local political campaigns, social interests, or church,Vi had a knack for making friends with almost all she encountered with her vivacious personality by always putting others' needs before her own, having an open-arm attitude and having a generous nature. Her acutely intrinsic talent of being able to connect with children made her a perennial favorite among the younger generations. She had the great fortune to enjoy her last months seeing and visiting with many of these friends and family.

Vi took great pride in making her home comfortable and inviting. She loved cooking and entertaining in her home, which was considered the gathering place for all holidays and occasions. Besides just being with her family and friends, Vi enjoyed playing and watching tennis, playing games (particularly mah jong, scrabble, card games and slot machines), dancing with her husband, traveling, learning new things, and attending plays, concerts and festivals.

Vi was pre-deceased by her parents, and her husband, Charlie, of almost 50 years. She is survived by her children, Rick Chan and Debbbie (Robert) Nozuka; her grandchildren, Laura (Travis) Phillips, Tyler Chan, Lindsay and Kelsey Nozuka; her great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Parker Phillips; her brothers, Alan (Lily) Wong and Philip (Dagne) Wong; a niece, Kristina Wong; and nephew, Jordan Wong. In addition, she is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and their families.

Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services on Saturday, August 31, 10:30 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Stockton, 3535 N. El Dorado St., Stockton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to a charity in her honor.
