Birth: 1840
Arkansas, USA
Death: 1865
Arkansas, USA

There is a headstone marked - C.W. and listed as unknown on the bottom of the post Civil War tablet. This is either Charles Wolf the son of Lorenzo Dow Wolf or Charles S. Wolf, son of Michael Wolf. It is located in the area of the Civil War burials and both men are thought to have served, though only one military record has been found.
So he is either that C W or is buried in an unmarked or unreadable site in this old Cemetery.

The date of his death indicates that it might have been during war service. However, records can be found to indicate that a Charles Wolf had a funeral service and that could also be this Charles. We know that his wife was deceased before he died and that both were deceased before the 1870 census. Some court records are available that we think belong to the person. There is indication that Unnamed Wolf, son of Lorenzo Dow Wolf, married Unknown and had daughter, Martha Ann Wolf, b. 1861. The wife/mother died in childbirth and when the father died about 1865 the baby was sent to live with Michael H. Wolf who had just married in 1865 to Nancy Cleo Elizabeth Adams. The most likely candidate for the father's name, is the son of Lorenzo Dow Wolf, Charles Wolf.

We do not find the middle initial "S" used with this person and it is believed that the Charles S. Wolf was the son of Michael Wolf. This Charles Wolf is the son of Lorenzo Dow Wolf.

The father of Martha Ann owned property at Head of Naviagtion on White River and it was sold by court for the upkeep of the baby. Martha is shown in the Michael H. Wolf household for the 1870 census and she is said to have had a hard life. She married Jonathan Burch when she was very young. They are found on the 1880 Jasper County Missouri census with young son Charles Lee. That is another reason that I think Charles Wolf might be her father - since she named her first born son, Charles.

I think Martha was sometimes thought to be a daughter of Michael H. Wolf because she was in his household for that 1870 census and it did not distinguish her as anything other than family member, when it should have listed her a niece. That has led to some confusion about her parentage. Michael H. Wolf was not yet married, when Martha was born in 1861, so that points to her being his niece instead of his daughter. The court records just said she was sent to live with Michael H. Wolf and did not distinguish his kinship to her.
