Death closed the tired eyes of Mrs J.P. Herndon, 81, Tuesday night at a rest home. The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the First Methodist Church and interment will be in the family plot in Center Point. Dr Duane Spiver pastor of the church, will officiate and will be assisted by Rev J.E. Mack both of San Antonio.
A native of Gordonville, she had lived in Kerrville for many years. She and the late Mr Herndon lived in Center Point before moving to Kerrville. Their home was on Earl Garrett Street and was known for its hospitality and christian living. After Mr Herndon's death in 1956, she spent some of her time with her nieces in San Antonio, but preferred to live in Kerrville and was there most of the time.
She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, and the Alpha Herndon Circle of the church as named in her honor. She was a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her life was a symbol of all that was good and kind and of helpfulness to others.
Her immediate survivor is one sister, Mrs Nannie Thomas, of Center Point, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be great-nephews, all of San Antonio, and will be Lloyd and Less Kitchens, George and George Thomas, Jr, S.W. Thomas and William Thomas.
Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home.
