Mattie Leola Witherspoon Player Garland, 90, widow of Willie Garland, died Nov. 1, 2004, at Carolina Hospital System, Lake City. Born Dec. 20, 1913, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Robert Witherspoon and Sarah Mouzon Witherspoon.

She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She joined Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church at an early age and made Christ her personal Savior. She served on the Missionary Society and in any capacity needed.

Survivors include one son, Willie (Lucille) Garland of New Zion; four daughters, Alma Brock of Greeleyville, Sarah Garland and Merlene Brown, both of Lake City, and Shirley (Henry) Felder of Manning; one granddaughter reared as her own, Gayle Garland of Lake City; one brother, Jammie Witherspoon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Irene Cobb of Stanford, Conn.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Viewing will be held at Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home in Lake City today from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Hickory Grove Church Road, Turbeville, with Elder Zander Davis, pastor, officiating, Elder James McFarlan, presiding, assisting the Rev. William Webb, the Rev. W.L. Thompson and the Rev. Danny McCray. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.
