Verena J. Witherspoon Atkinson

Verena J. Witherspoon Atkinson, 96, of Erie, died Wednesday morning, February 23, 2011 at Golden Living Center - Western Reserve. A resident of Erie all her life she was born in Erie on September 9, 1914 a daughter of the late John R. and Clara I. Kepler Witherspoon.

Verena was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was a member of the XYZ Senior Group. She was also member of the Green Township Senior Group for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband Richard Atkinson in 1984; one son, J. Thomas Atkinson, and two brothers, George Witherspoon and John "Jack" Witherspoon.

Survivors include one son, Dick Atkinson and his wife Rose of Murfeesboro, Tenn., and daughter-in-law Cheryl Atkinson of Erie; five grandchildren Diane and her husband Greg Nethaway of Calif., Kellie and her husband Jim Vanderbloom of Tenn., Scott Atkinson of Tenn., Chris and her husband Scott Baker of Erie, and Jack and his wife Jenn Atkinson of Edinboro; and many great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services there at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Chaplain Blaire Smith of Asera Care Hospice.

Burial will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery.
