Architect. Noted U.S. Tastemaker of an era with architects Vaux and Downing.

Andrew Jackson Downing brought Withers to the U.S. after AJ also convinced architect and future Withers' partner
Calvert Vaux (b. Dec 20, 1824 London, England drowned Nov 19, 1895 Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY) to join him in Newburgh, NY on the Hudson River north of NYC.
Withers' High Victorian Gothic Jefferson Market Courthouse, located in Greenwich Village, is the best known of Withers' works. Other famous works: his only known Cast Iron building -a commercial store at 448 Broome Street in SoHo, and the high altar in Trinity Church, NYC.
His mentor, Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852) is buried: Cedar Hill Cemetery in Orange Cty, Newburgh NY.

Frederick Clarke Withers (1828 1901) was born in England, and kept his British citizenship, although he fought in the Civil War. He died at home 163 Glenwood Ave, Yonkers, NY.

Services were at St. Paul's Church, Yonkers per one-line NY Times Obit.

He is Buried in Trinity Cemetery on West 155th St.

Note: this is Ray C. Sawyer's 1931 transcription of the gravestones on Withers' family plot: What was still legible 80 yrs ago (now it is not): Fred's is the only upright monument; the other markers are flat and grass hidden
