Wilma Shaffer DeKeyser
May 19, 1928–March 1, 2005
Wilma Shaffer DeKEYSER passed away from this life at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday at her home, 3461 E. 200 North, Rochester, following a lengthy illness. She was 76 years old.
She was born Lillian Rose Pickett to Everett and Hilda B. Pickett in Pittsboro, on May 19, 1928. Following her parents' divorce, she and her four siblings were placed for adoption. In May 1931, James Ernest and Myrtle Wisely, Argos, adopted the toddler "sight unseen" requesting
a little girl with curly hair and brown eyes. Her name was then changed to Wilma Eileen.
She grew up on a farm near Argos and graduated from Argos High School in 1946. She married Victor Keith Shaffer on March 1, 1947, and later moved to Rochester. Vic passed away on Feb. 4, 1998. On Dec. 18, 1999, Wilma married Charles DeKeyser in Logansport.
Wilma received bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Indiana University.
She also held a Reading Specialist Certificate from Purdue University. She was employed by Argos Community Schools and Rochester Community Schools. She retired from Rochester in 1996 after 35 years of teaching, 27 of which were spent at Columbia Elementary in Rochester.
She was the author of "A Perceptual Motor Handbook for Teachers" that she dedicated to children who struggle to learn. She held workshops for teachers in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan to train them in her perceptual motor program. She also taught summer classes for
teachers at Bethel College and worked in the Reading Clinic at Indiana Purdue University in Fort Wayne. The greatest success she attained was when a struggling student achieved academic success with her help.
Her loves and interests included her family, friends, teaching, traveling, music, reading, gardening, her pets and her church work. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Logansport since 1978. She was also a member of the Indiana State Teachers
Association, National Educa-tion Association, RCTA and a lifetime member of Indiana University Alumni Association.
Survivors include her husband, Charles DeKeyser; one son, Steve and wife Joann Shaffer, Rochester; two daughters, Juleen and husband Ron Newcomer, Rochester, and Christine and husband LaVar Hamblin, Burley, Idaho; 10 grandchildren, Mike, Tony and Matt Shaffer, Misty Shaffer Hoff, Jennifer Newcomer Vigil, Kami Newcomer, Andrea Hamblin Tegan, Eric Hamblin, Kelly Jenkins, Marty Prater; and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her seven "sisters" (in-law) and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; a son, Michael Dee, in 1952; a sister, Cleo; and three brothers, Merwyn, Marshall and Eugene Epple.
Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Indiana 14 West, with Bishop Joseph Hintz officiating. Interment will follow at IOOF Cemetery, Rochester. Friends may visit with the family from 3-8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to
her service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Columbia Elementary School Library in Rochester for books to be purchased in Wilma's memory.
