Ruby Sue Wirtz went to be with her Savior on November 2, 2012, after a long illness. Ruby Sue was born on April 11, 1944, in Mullen, Nebraska, to James Wirtz and Ruby Alice (Bassett) Wirtz. Ruby Sue was the oldest of six children. Her early childhood was filled with the family moving around a lot to support the dams being constructed in the Pacific Northwest. The family finally settled down on the "Old Inland Empire Hwy" west of Benton City in 1958. Ruby Sue graduated from KiBe High School in 1962, and in that same year, married the love of her life, Vernon Durham. Ruby Sue and Vern were married 30 years. They lived and raised three boys in Kennewick. Their three sons are Dean, Dan and Doug, and all are proud to be fourth generation Kennewick natives. Ruby's adventurous spirit led her to various areas of employment including Griggs in Pasco, Hanford Patrol, a licensed paralegal and driving for BenFranklin Transit and the Kennewick School District. Being an early riser, she also worked as a bundle drop driver for the Tri-City Herald. Ruby Sue returned to school and obtained Associates Degree as a paralegal in June of 1994. Ruby retired as a bus driver from the Kennewick School District in 2010.
Ruby was a member of South Hills Church, where she was active in the Celebrate Recovery Ministry and served as a driver for the church. In addition to her faith, Ruby's passions included walking and playing with her dog Joker, knitting, reading, sports activities and spending time at the family cabin south of Pomeroy Washington. She loved her grandchildren and supported them by attending school and sports activities. In the last few years, Ruby worked hard to build lasting memories with her grandchildren. She was always the Patriot by supporting our troops and "Buying American".
Ruby Sue was preceded in death by her mother Ruby Alice (Bassett) Hunt, brother Howard Prentice, infant sister Sadie Ruth and Vernon Durham.
She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Dean (Paula) Durham, Daniel (Amy) Durham and Doug (Shawna) Durham, her nine grandchildren Nathan Durham, Paul (Kylee) Durham, Carissa (Tim) Cross, Hunter Durham, Conner Durham, Kaleb Durham, Griffin Durham, Ryker Durham, Camden Durham and by her future great-grandchild of Paul and Kylee. Her surviving siblings are Sandra (Mike) McFadden, Ronald Prentice, Julie (Gary) Monda, Laura (Dale) Dudley and Vern's sisters Beverly (Darwin) Griswold and Carol (Terry) Volkman. She is also survived numerous nieces, nephews, and longtime friend Lorene Mateo.
A celebration of Ruby's life will be held at South Hills Church on November 10 at 2 pm with reception to follow. Memorial contributions and be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
