Margaret H. (Wirey) Wantland
Margaret H. (Wirey) Wantland, 94, passed away Nov. 26, 2008, after a brief illness. She was a resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and a former resident of Indianapolis.
She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 68 years, Calvin A. Wantland; two daughters, Patricia A. (Charles) Harvey of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Ellen K. (Stephen) Stewart of Payson, Ariz.; and a son, Bert Wantland (Denise Singleton) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
She was the proud grandmother of Brent and Brian Dougherty, Natalie Harvey Hefter and Emily Doughtery Stahmer. Four great-grandchildren, Monica, Shannon, Mikala and Blake Dougherty, provided her with great pleasure. She also is survived by nieces and nephews, Delores Wirey Grinkmeyer, Arthur Wirey, Reba Wirey Meno, Leah Wirey Freeman and Gene Wirey.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Orville, Oris, Floyd and Marion Wirey; and two sisters, Cecil Hamilton and Esther Warren.
Margaret was born in Johnson County. She attended Hopewell School near Franklin. After high school, she worked at the Real Silk Hosiery factory in Indianapolis. During World War II, she worked for Retained Accounts, which maintained records for the armed forces.
After raising her family, she was an employee of L.S. Ayres and Co. in Greenwood in the men's furnishings department. She was always active in the PTAs of her children's schools. She was president of School 49 PTA in Indianapolis, an officer in George Washington High School PTA, and president of the Burkhart Elementary School and Meridian Middle School PTAs. She was creative in fundraising and a talented public speaker.
She was a 55-year member of the Queen Esther Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Indianapolis.
She made many beautiful quilts using a variety of fabrics from the 1970s to the 1990s. She loved sharing them with her friends and family. She also enjoyed extensive travel in the United States and abroad with her family. Her love of animals and visits from her granddog Murphy sustained her during her illness.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center, Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Washington Park East Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Hospice of Palm Beach County in care of the funeral home, which was so very supportive during her last days.
