COL US AIR FORCE WORLD WAR II, KOREA
Col. "Josh" T. Winstead Jr., USAF Retired, 101, was born Aug. 14, 1910 in Macclesfield, NC. He graduated from NC State University in 1932 with a degree in electrical engineering. With no employment available in the engineering field, he applied for Air Cadet training with the US Army Air Corps and graduated from Randolph and Kelly Fields in 1933 as 2nd Lt. Air Corps Reserve. With subsequent assignment to Mitchell Field, NY for two years, he was involved with the infamous "Air Mail Contract Cancellations" of 1934.

In 1936, he joined American Airlines at Chicago and flew the Chicago-New York route for two years. 1938 he received a regular commission in the Army Air Corps and returned to active duty with a reconnaissance squadron serving at Langley Field, VA; Miami, FL; Gander, Newfoundland and MacDill Field, FL, where he was stationed when the war started on December 7, 1941.

During the early days of the war as a staff officer in the 3rd Bomber Command, he was involved in formulating plans for the expansion and training of bombing units and crews. In August of 1942, he was promoted to Lt. Colonel and assigned to the 336th Bomb Group as Commander and stationed at Ft. Myers, FL. The mission was to train B-26 replacement crews. Subsequent assignments were to Barksdale Field, LA as Supervisor of B-26 training where he was promoted to Colonel and later as Operations Officer, 3rd Bomber Command, MacDill Field, FL.

In early 1945 he was assigned to the Fifth Bomb Wing in Foggia, Italy where he was involved with B-17 bombing missions into Germany. With the war over, Colonel Winstead returned to the States and was assigned to the Pentagon in the Strategic Plans Sections of the Plans and Operations Division of the War Department General Staff with General Eisenhour as the then Chief of Staff. With 2 hearing problems and removal from flying status, he retired early and moved to Sarasota, FL in 1959.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Joanne of Sarasota; daughter, Kathryn D. Ridenour and son, James T. Winstead; grandsons, James R. Winstead and Joshua P. Ridenour and great-grandchildren, Leaha R. and Kyle Ridenour. He is also survived by Mrs. Winstead's children, Mark Zweig, Stephanie Corrigan and Karen Davis.(National Cremation & Burial Society)
