Marietta Winstead
(May 23, 1921 - July 1, 2009)

Marietta Winstead, 88, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away July 1, 2009.

Marietta was born in Knob Noster, Missouri on May 23, 1921, to Thomas and Delpha Summerskill, and attended school in Sedalia, Missouri, graduating from Smith Cotton High School. She was the last surviving member of her family, which included four brothers and three sisters.

She met and married Laurent Amos "Bill" Winstead on July 21, 1940, and they were present as employees at the opening of the first Kansas City Winstead's on the Country Club Plaza. It is said that Bill fried and Marietta served the first hamburger sold on opening day. Her picture still hangs on the wall at that location. Subsequently, they opened and operated three more Winstead's drive-in restaurants around the city, and Marietta was the last surviving member of the Winstead family to have owned and operated a Winstead's prior to the sale of the drive-ins.

Bill and Marietta moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in the 1960's where they owned Log Haven Resort, and subsequently Winstead Real Estate for nearly twenty years. After Bill's death in 1984, Marietta continued in the real estate profession at the Lake of the Ozarks until her retirement in the 1990's.

In her working career, Marietta was always a partner with husband Bill, and their clients knew them for professionalism, fairness, and service. She was a magnificent salesperson and a hard worker. To her family, she was devoted, giving, and a constant source of inspiration.

Marietta is survived by her three children, Katherine Knoche and husband, Harry, of Overland Park, Kansas, Cheryl Barron and husband, Mike, of Lake Tapawingo, Missouri, and Bill Winstead and wife, Debbie, of Camdenton, Missouri; five grandchildren, Kim Smith of Chesterfield, Missouri, Kerri Hall of Shawnee, Kansas, Jennifer Barron of London, England, Brooke Mehnert of Lenexa, Kansas, and Heather Winstead of Camdenton, Missouri and five great grandchildren.

Services for Marietta will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, July 4, 2009 in Allee Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Camdenton. Burial will follow in Smithton Cemetery, Smithton, Missouri. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:00 a.m., Saturday in the funeral home.
