Cannaan Woman Passes Apr. 6
Mrs. E.P. Babcock, 66, Buried Sat'y in Chatham Ctr.
Mrs. E.P. Babcock, 65, passed away in her home in Canaan Wednesday, April 6.
The deceased was born August 1, 1871 in Chatham Center, the daughter of Edward and Rachael Sigsbee Winchester and had been a resident of Canaan for the past 38 years. In August, 1888 she became the bride of Edward P. Babcock who survives, with a son, Ray Babcock of Pittsfield, Vermont, a sister, Bertha Moore of Cannan, and a granddaughter, Bertha Babcock.
Mrs. Babcock was ever interested in church work and is credited with having directed the first Junior Christian Endeavor Society in Canaan. She was active in the church missionary Society, the W.C.T.U. and the Columbia county historical Society. She served as village postmistress for eight years.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the home and at 2 p.m. from Canaan Congregational Church of which she was a member. The Rev. Dr. W.T. Bartley was officiating pastor. Burial was in Chatham Center Cemetery.
A good neighbor, a kind and thoughtful friend, the community will mourn her passing.
Gifford and Son, Chatham, were in charge of services.
