At the age of 16 he joined the Sheridan Methodist Church in Virginia.
He married Rosa Belle Wilson 30 August 1899 in Ceres, Bland County, Virginia. They both had grown up there.
In March 1904 they moved west and homesteaded land west of the Duck Lake area of Lincoln County, WA. In 1917 they bought a farm near Lamona, Lincoln County, WA.
He died from a sudden heart attack. His funeral was held in the Evangelical Church.
