Mary Willson Felton, a longtime resident of Houston and in later years Tyler, passed away Dec. 25, 2011. Mary was 90 years old. She was a person of faith and had a blessedly peaceful transition.
The cause of death was complications from primary biliary cirrhosis.
Mary was born on Sept. 20, 1921, in the tiny East Texas town of Chester in her family's home in the piney woods. Mary was a farm child and shouldered chores from a young age, including picking cotton in the summer sun - a task she recalled none too fondly. The daughter of a schoolteacher, Mary could read and write by age four, and she remained an avid reader her entire life. Early memories are of the family's subscription to the Dallas Morning News (a Depression era luxury) and following accounts of Texas Gov. "Ma" Ferguson as well as the saga of Bonnie and Clyde.
Mary attended the College of Marshall, now known as East Texas Baptist University. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the academic honor society. After graduating, Mary remained in Marshall as the college president's secretary. At the advent of World War II, Mary took the civil service exam and worked in Houston for the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. After the war, Mary was employed by First City National Bank in downtown Houston. She married Charles Rex Felton on New Year's Day 1947. During their honeymoon in Galveston, the newlyweds visited the storied Balinese Room, which was lost to the sea during Hurricane Ike. Mary lived in Houston until retirement, when she and Charles moved to Tyler. Being children of rural East Texas, they longed for small-town America.
Mary is survived by her husband, Charles of The Woodlands; her daughter, Rexanne Felton of Houston; her son, Dr. Charles Ronald Felton and wife Margaret of Greenland, N.H.; her grandson, Sam Felton; and her granddaughter, Anna Felton.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. at Chester Baptist Church. Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Woodville.
