Rose Burns was the daughter of John Williams and Mary Radke, one of several children born in Brooklyn, New York. Her father was from Germany, having immigrated to America in 1880. In the 1910 U.S. Census his name was John Willensky Jr. but the family adopted the name "Williams" later, though never legally changing it. In 1910 Rose, her older sister Martha, and her younger sister Kate still lived with their widowed father. Three older sisters had already moved out of the home. The 1910 Census also provides the details that Rose's father at 54 was a "Special Officer" with the Fire Patrol and that Rose at 17 worked in a millinery shop, a popular job then as it was the heyday of huge women's hats.

A rose for Great-Aunt Rose, who was an inspiration to my wife when she was a young woman to strike out from Brooklyn and find the wide world!
