Kansas, USA
Death: Apr. 25, 1909

Anna was the daughter and only child of John Williams and Melissa Jane Rutledge. The family was in the thick of the Kansas troubles of the time and, while still an infant, Anna lost her father and was taken to her grandparents' home in Vernon Co., Missouri. There was no peace in Missouri. The family farm was raided and Anna's grandfather, Fletcher Rutledge, was beaten so badly that he was crippled for life. This was followed by a notorious Union order which mandated the removal of all western Missouri counties inhabitants and the burning of their homes so that they could not harbor Confederate guerrillas . . . so, the Rutledge's were expelled from the county. They crossed back into Kansas, re-settling near Garnett in Anderson County. Anna's widowed mother then married Benjamin Husted, taking Anna with her to Linn Co., Kansas, where, on 11 July 1877, Anna was married to James Benjamin Paul. James was born in Scioto Co., Ohio, and came to Kansas with his parents in 1858. He was a Union veteran of the Civil War and farmed near Garnett, Kansas, until the late 1880's when he homesteaded in Columbia Co., Oregon. In the late 1890's, with his health failing, James and his family moved to Portland, where he died from pneumonia on 13 February 1901. Anna was married on 26 March 1904 in Astoria, Oregon, to Arthur Woodbury. They returned to Portland where Anna died from cirrhosis of the liver. By James Paul, Anna was the mother of James Benjamin, Cora, Frederick Dennis, Prudence Levisa, Charles William, Della Malinda, Melissa Jane, and Zenith Harold; by Arthur Woodbury, she was the mother of Ina.
