Gunner, Thomas. Williams Served with the U.S. Navy on the USS Maine (No not the one that blew up in Havana harbor in 1898) during the Civil War of 1861-65 He came out to Nevada in the late 1860s to work in the mines as a blaster or Powder man. He lost his left eye in 1881 due to flying rock fragments when a blasting cap went off premature. But this didn't stop him and he continued to work in the mines until 1902 when he gave it all up for a Govt pension of $18 a month (Later increased to $25 in April 1911) due to rheumatism and other complaints he received in the service of his country. He died Nov. 5th 1914 at age 72 of Lung Cancer brought on by years of breathing dust & smoke in the mines, He was buried with full military Honors by the local Grand Army of the Republic Post No.10 in Virginia City NV.

It is said to be Thomas Williams as its Penciled on the Back "T. Williams US Navy 1862" If he is in his Navy Uniform then its the oddest one I have ever seen but the Navy was allowed some leeway so you never know.
