Robert W. Williams, Sgt. Maj. USMC (retired), 80, of Jacksonville, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer. He had an illustrious career in the U.S. Marine Corps for 30 years of active duty from 1944 through 1974. He served with his grandfather, Robert L. Bell in the Virginia Militia and was discharged Oct. 1, 1944, in order to join the USMC. He served in World War II, twice in Korea and in Vietnam. He earned three Purple Hearts, the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal, two Bronze Stars, Combat Action Ribbon for service in Korea, Presidential Unit Citation with Three Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, Commendation Medal with Combat ?V,? Good Conduct Medals and Sharpshooters Awards. He served in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Divisions plus the 1st Marine Air Wing. In 1971, he was selected as the Inspirational Leader of the Year by the Navy League and given the Gen. Gerald C. Thomas Award. The most recent award he received and one of the most treasured is The Hard Core Warrior Award, given to him by the Regiment of Retired Marines. This award only goes to those who have served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He also belonged to several Aviation Clubs and Museums. He has held a private pilot?s license since a teen and has one of the few licenses with no expiration date. He took great joy in attending air shows to display his Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp Radial Engine. He knew more about aviation history than one could imagine and loved sharing his knowledge with anyone who was interested in hearing it.
