Dr. Bruce Wilkin a devoted spouse, beloved father and grandfather, and a friend to numerous people and students has passed away. Bruce was born in El Centro CA.
He attended Chowchilla High School and graduated from Redlands College, where he played tackle and linebacker for their football team.
He received his Masters Degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his Doctorate Degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
During World War II, Bruce proudly served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force flying missions over Africa and Italy. He faithfully served in the Air Force Reserve and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1985.
As an educator he taught at Exeter High School where he also served as the head football and track coach.
He then went on to the Department of Education in Visalia as Coordinator of Secondary Education. From 1971 to 1991 he taught statistics and research in the School of Education at California State University, Fresno.
Dr. Wilkin served as an advisor to a number of local school districts and was known as a teacher who never hesitated to go the extra mile. Students and colleagues alike regarded Dr. Wilkin with high esteem and viewed him as an educator who served with distinction.
Bruce was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, camping and fly-fishing.
He loved classical music and played violin in the Tulare County Symphony.
He also enjoyed flying his Stinson and other airplanes.
But perhaps his favorite outside interest was photography. Bruce was a talented amateur photographer. His subjects included candid black and whites and numerous stills of his beloved Yosemite.
Bruce is survived by Susan Wilkin, his wife of 60 years; son, Michael Wilkin and his wife Marlana; grandsons, Timothy Wilkin, and Bruce Wilkin and his wife Kelly; brothers, Ben Wilkin and his wife Grace, and Bob Wilkin and his wife Isabel; sister, Margaret Grady and her husband John; one nephew; and three nieces.
Bruce touched countless lives in a loving, caring manner and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial Service will be held at San Joaquin Gardens Fellowship Hall, 5555 N. Fresno Street on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at 10:00 a.m.
Memorials may be made in his name to Kremen School of Education & Human Development at CSU, Fresno or San Joaquin Gardens.
