Birth: May 23, 1931
Death: Jul. 24, 2009

Donald Wilburn, 78, passed away July 24, 2009, surrounded by the love of his family, after a fifty-five year battle with diabetes. He was born on May 23, 1931, to James Clarence and Lucille Adele (Radey) Wilburn in Oakland, CA. He and his elder brother, James Clarence Wilburn, Jr., spent much of their childhood on their grandmother's farm in Washington State. In 1949, Don joined the United States Marine Corps, transforming his life into one of honor, courage, and commitment. The Marines instilled in Don a sense of pride and a positive, can-do attitude that he retained his entire life. He served his country faithfully during the Korean War, most notably at the battles of Inchon and Chosin Reservoir. On June 9, 1951, he married Susan Parks in Sherman Oaks, CA. As a team, they built a family in southern California, raising two daughters, Donna and Laureen. Don began his career in computer software design in 1956, working at major companies such as IBM and Control Data, where he developed not only programming languages such as FORTRAN but also a passion for teaching. Eventually, his pursuit of new challenges led him to the Southwest, where he worked for various firms in Oklahoma and Texas. Don and Susan lived in Dallas for eighteen years, where he became a devoted Cowboys fan, before retiring and returning to Edmond, OK. In retirement, Don continued to write software, focusing on creating a program to aid diabetics in maintaining their health. Even after a bilateral amputation in 1998, Don rose to the challenge and continued to live life on his terms, one of optimism coupled with practicality. He always had a joke for waitresses, sound advice for his grandchildren, and boundless love for his wife and daughters. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughters: Donna Hill and Laureen Byrd, both of Edmond; his five grandchildren: Steve Perkins, of Houston, TX; Jennifer Corley and Christi Hinkle, both of Edmond; Shawn Byrd and Gary Hill, both of Oklahoma City; and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond, OK on Thursday, July 30, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the Wilburn family requests donations be sent to the Juvenile . Semper Fi, Grandpa.
