Viola Mary Burke, 88, formerly of 1723 Blake Blvd. SE, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in Living Center West following an extended illness. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, by the Rev. Karl Glovik. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Stewart Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Survivors include two sons, David J. and Steven A., both of Cedar Rapids; a sister,
Marie McGill Langenfeld of Independence; two granddaughters, Tiffany of Arcadia, Calif., and Veronica of Reno, Nev.; and a grandson, Bryan of Truckee/Lake Tahoe, Calif. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, twin sister Leona Swenka and Lorena Wieser; and a great-niece, Debbie Buresh.
Viola was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Independence, the daughter of Anthony and Ann Weber Wieser. In 1933, she moved from Independence to Cedar Rapids, where she took up housekeeping and also worked for Century Engineering during World War II.
She married John E. Burke on Nov. 5, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, who was a flag man on the Rock Island Railroad. He died in September of 1966. Later, Viola worked for Regis and Washington high schools in cafeteria food service, retiring in 1972.
This could not stop Viola from lending a hand to her good friends in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of St. Margaret Circle at Immaculate Conception Church.
