A Tribute to my Beloved Uncle . . .
GARTH EUGENE WIDDIFIELD, M.D. 1928-2014

Wedding Anniversary 21 June 1954

An Outstanding Doctor for 58 years! He truly loved his profession!

Born July 21, 1928 in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio to the late Clarence Eugene Widdifield 1903-1965 and Madge Delores GRAVES Widdifield 1904-1988. He was one of four children born to them:
1 - Billy Gene Widdifield 1923-1925
2 - Phyllis Elaine WIDDIFIELD Brown 1926-2000
3 - Garth Eugene Widdifield, MD 1928-2014
4 - Duane Alden Widdifield 1934-

As a child, Garth lived in Ohio, Indiana, and California. He loved California and every year he would take his family and his parents out west for a two week vacation. Garth was a very generous man and loved his family dearly. His hobby included cars - every two years he would faithfully trade in his previous Cadillac for a brand new one. He had two cars that he loved restoring - a Jaguar and an English M.G. I remember he was so thrilled over his brand new Lincoln Continental Convertible that the hard top went into the trunk. Way cool for that time period - plus big, luxurious interiors!

Garth was a graduate of Shortridge High School, he attended Butler University, where upon graduation he was commissioned as an Officer in the US Army. Dr. Widdifield graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine, Class of 1954. Dr. Garth Widdifield and Patricia "Pat" CALLAHAN 1932-1994 were married in Danville, Hendricks, Indiana while en-route to Long Beach, California where he was to serve his medical internship at Seaside Memorial Hospital. They lived at 1722 Henderson Ave Apt B for their first year.

Subsequently, Dr. Widdifield completed his internship at Seaside Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California and practiced there for 3 years at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center with distinction. Dr. G.E. Widdifield was featured in a Long Beach, California Newspaper for delivering a set of triplets. In the late 1950's natural triplets were uncommon and quite a news worthy event.

Garth Widdifield and his wife, Patricia were the parents of 4 children:
1 - Bret Harte Widdifield
2 - Crystal Maria Widdifield
3 - John Fremont Widdifield
4 - William "Bill" Sherman Widdifield

Dr. Widdifield's home, at 8211 S. Delaware, was featured in the Indianapolis Star Newspaper in the 1970's as a Show Home featuring the interior designing of his wife, Patricia CALLAHAN Widdifield. One could purchase tickets to visit several homes chosen for this special event.

Dr. Widdifield operated his Private Practice on the south side of Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana for 58 years!! In those 58 years of Private Family Practice, it was estimated that Dr. Widdifield touched over 500,000 lives and delivered 5,000 babies, serving four generations of families. Also, another achievement in this time period was to own a "Private Practice" as many of the hospitals - insurance companies "own - buy out" the doctors today leaving very few owning their own medical practice.

When Garth had to go to medical conventions, he would take his family along and invite his niece, Carole Anne Brown, to come with them to watch their children and go sight seeing. Garth loved to travel, go to museums, and was a history buff, making the experience so special and memorable - by jet, train, or car. Dr. Widdifield enjoyed genealogy along with his Mother and Family Historian, Madge GRAVES Widdifield. He joined the Sons of the American Revolution through Patriot Captain Ichabod Ashcraft 1737-1804, his 5th Great Grandfather on his maternal side. Recently, he was so pleased that his niece, Carole Anne presented him with another four names of Patriots to submit.

Dr. Garth Eugene Widdifield, Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 2:30 PM. Cause of Death: cerebral aneurysm
