Mary Lou Morand, 78, of Wilmington, died 10:54 p.m. Monday (June 15, 2009) at her residence after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas G. Morand. They were married Feb. 6, 1954, and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this year.
Mrs. Morand was born Dec. 4, 1930, in Hanover, Mich., daughter of the late Claire F. and Mildred Wickman. She graduated from high school in Marshall, Mich., in 1949 and from Western Michigan College of Education in 1951. She was employed by the Kellogg Company in Kalamazoo, Mich., before moving to Ohio. She was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church, where she and her husband had sung in the Resurrection choir and served as Eucharistic ministers for many years. She also served on the Women's Sodality at St. Columbkille. Additionally, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Homes of Wilmington and a volunteer for Hospice. She especially enjoyed wildlife, feeding the birds and the changing of the seasons. She was most happy caring for her family, entertaining friends and visiting her grandchildren. She cared deeply for the poor and underprivileged and donated to many worthy causes, including several Indian reservation schools. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Shirley A. (Robert B.) Anderson of Freeport, Maine, Jill E. (Danny R.) Vaughn of Wilmington, Nancy S. Morand (Barry) Thurston of Wilmington and Mary K. (John H.) McDermott of Whitehouse; three sons, Michael T. (Brenda R.) Morand of Sidney, John D. Morand of Wilmington and James F. (Barbara E.) Morand of Zionsville, Ind.; and 17 grandchildren, Erik N. Sabin of Manchester, N.H., Jason J. (Sara) Palumbo of New York City, N.Y., Jessica A. Hancock of Bridgton, Maine, Michael E. Hancock of Medford, Mass., Sara M. Morand of Sidney, Joseph M. Morand of Sidney, David T. Morand of Sidney, Kevin T. McDermott of Whitehouse, Kelsey N. McDermott of Whitehouse, Maggie K. McDermott of Whitehouse, Erin B. McDermott of Whitehouse, Anna J. McDermott of Whitehouse, Mary C. "Katie" McDermott of Whitehouse, Lizzie M. McDermott of Whitehouse, Andrew J. Morand of Zionsville, Ind., Matthew T. Morand of Zionsville, Ind., and Rachel E. Morand of Zionsville, Ind.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Harry Hackett; two brothers, Duane Wickman and Frankie Wickman; and a sister, Ruthie Herwick.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 73 N. Mulberry St., Wilmington, the Rev. James M. Wedig as celebrant, with burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Care Hospice, P.O. Box 123, Wilmington, 45177. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Carol Bogan Home Health Care, Brenda Johnson, Ruth Randolph, Community Care Hospice and Jayne Bray for their excellent care and support during Mary Lou's illness.
