In 1942 he registered for the U.S. Draft of World War II where he was listed as a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina.

They moved to Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina for a short while during his studies at UNC and then back to Sanford, North Carolina.

At war's end, he returned to Chapel Hill whereupon he completed his degree, majoring in Commerce. After a job with Swift and Co in Greensboro, he joined the family business in Chapel Hill, the NC Cafeteria, which had been started by his father in law, Jennings Chandler, Sr. He managed the cafeteria until it was sold in the early 1970s.
