Carolyn was the daughter of Lyn Elmer Whittington and Alma Livingston Whittington. She was severely mentally disabled (believed to be due to an accident at birth). She was raised by her grandparents, Elmer O'Brien Whittington and Rosa Mae Loy Whittington who loved her very much. When her grandmother became too old and disabled and could no longer care for her, Carolyn was institutionalized. She died in a nursing home just six months after being separated from her loving grandmother.
