He lived his entire life, until 1958, near Old Texmo. He then moved to Oklahoma City, where he was doing construction work when he was critically injured, with death resulting.
He was a member of the Moorewood Baptist church.
On December 24, 1933 he was united in marriage to Theo Coen at Leedey. Five children were born to this union, all of whom survive.
Merrill was a good husband and father, and a kind neighbor and friend.
Funeral services were conducted from the Moorewood Baptist church at 2 p.m., Sunday January 28, with Eld. Albert Burch, pastor and Eld. W.D. Hedge, former pastor, now of Altus, in charge. Burial was in Moorewood cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Whitson; two brothers, Tom and U.G. Whitson; one sister, Florence and one granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Grace Chappell and husband Donnie of Durham, Okla. and Addie Whitson of Oklahoma City; three sons Lloyd of Elk City,Jesse of the home and Billy, who was working with him at the time of his death; three grandchildren; two brothers, Gracy of Leedey and Charles of California; one half-brother Bill Hill, also of California; five sisters, Myrtle Marshall of Canoga Park, Ca., Mrs. Robbie Mullen and Mrs. Mary Petty of Checotah, Ok., Mrs. Alma McGonigal of Tulsa, Ok., and his twin sister, Mrs. Bess Fletcher of Toronto, Ohio, other relatives and many friends.
