LEOMINSTER - Mildred F. (Mahan) Whitney, 88, of 14A Fernwood Drive, a noted advocate for elderly affairs, died Wednesday afternoon in Leominster Hospital.

Her husband, Leland A. Whitney, died in 1965. She leaves a daughter, Ethel E. Whitney of Leominster; and a sister, Mary Fredette of Gardner. A son, Donald L. Whitney, died in 1987. She was born in Leominster, daughter of Philip and Ethel Mahan, and lived here all her life.

Mrs. Whitney was an assember at E.B. Kingman Co. for many years, and was later promoted to a supervisory position before retiring from the company in 1974.

In 1978, Mrs. Whitney began working for Consumer Advocates for Better Care as a visiting advocate for nursing home residents. She later became involved with Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), the Head Start Program here and the Green Thumb program, which offered jobs in social agencies to qualified applicants among the elderly.

In 1981, Mrs. Whitney was honored by Gov. Edward King for her work in improving the long-term care of the elderly. In 1985, Gov. Michael S. Dukakis recognized her for her work in the city's Consumer Advocates for Better Care Ombudsman Program. Also in 1985, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cited her for her work on behalf of the elderly.

She was a member of St. Leo's Church, Leominster Senior Citizens and the Templeton Fish & Game Club.

The funeral will be tomorrow from Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, 108 Main St. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
