He enlisted in Company F, Massachusetts 27th Infantry Regiment on August 15, 1862 and was mustered out on September 27, 1864. He married Susan Abigail Tryon on April 16, 1834. He died of heart failure, according the death record. He was the son of Israel and Martha Whitney.
