Jesse Whitney, 5, Dies From Injuries Suffered In Saturday Car-truck Crash
Jess Whitney, 5, of 2619 S. Prairie, died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital, the second victim of a car-truck accident Saturday which also killed his brother, Walter Jr., 9.
The boys were passengers in a car driven by their grandmother, Mrs. Ulmon Andrews, 1518 Pine, when it slammed head on into a semi-trailer 8 miles south of Pueblo.
Mrs. Ulmon was in fair condition at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital Sunday night. A third passenger in the car, O. B. McClendon Jr., 10, son of the Rev. and Mrs. O. B. McClendon, 511 W. Arroyo, also is in fair condition.
The party was returning from a fishing trip near Walsenburg when the crush occurred about 3:15 p.m. Walter died instantly at the crash scene. Jesse suffered internal injuries.
The State Patrol said as the Andrews car topped a small hill, a gas truck driven by Burl B. Andis, 63, of Alamosa, pulled into the northbound lane. Mrs. Andrews attempted to avoid the truck by passing it to the right, but lost control of her vehicle and it went into a slide, smashing head on into a semi-trailer truck loaded with machinery. The truck was driven by Eugene Burgoyne, 35, of Denver. Burgoyne was uninjured.
Walter and Jesse were the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Whitney. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Delores, Ola, Louise, Virginia, Annette, Charlotte and Gus.
The bodies are at the Jones Mortuary. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
