Vernon Welch Whitney

Vernon Welch Whitney, 89, died at home on Sunday, December 12, 2010, after a long illness. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on February 17th, 1921, the daughter of Virginia Marks Welch and Dr. Stewart Henry Welch. She attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia, and was graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was a life-long member of St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church, a member of The Junior League of Birmingham, and a member of the Birmingham Sailing Club. She owned and operated Mother Goose Kindergarten in Crestline Village from 1952 to 1970. Vernon was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of fifty-nine years, Richard Henry Whitney; and her younger sister, Lee Welch Cooper, of Atlanta, Georgia. She is survived by her son, Dr. Richard Henry Whitney, Jr. and his wife Lynda, of Mountain Brook, Alabama; her daughter, Rebecca Whitney Turnham and her husband Dr. Alan Cleveland Turnham, of Dothan, Alabama; her older brother, Stewart Henry Welch, Jr. and his wife Sally, of Mountain Brook, Alabama; and her brother-in-law, Judge Oliver Milton Cooper, Jr., of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher Alan Turnham and his wife Erin, of Montgomery, Alabama; Richard Henry Whitney, III, of Pasadena, California; Jennifer Whitney Turnham, of Birmingham, Alabama, and her fiance, George Augustus Nelson, IV; and William Fairclough Whitney, II, of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and five surviving nieces and nephews and their spouses, children, and grandchildren. Graveside services were conducted by The Reverend Geoffrey Evans, at Elmwood Cemetery on Monday, December 20, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church, 1910 12th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205.
