Shirley Whiting Scowden, died September 3, 2007 in Tallahassee following a long illness. She was 85.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, at Killearn Lakes United Methodist Church.
In lieu of f lowers the family has requested that donations be made to Big Ben Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Boulevard, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
She has now joined her husband of 58 years, James Frederick Scowden. They were childhood sweethearts since kindergarten. They moved from Meadville, PA in the early 1950s to Vero Beach, where they started and operated Scowden Construction Company. She was a homemaker and active in the Community Church in Vero Beach. She was also an active member of Crossnore Presbyterian Church of Linville, NC where she and Fred resided full time for the past 13 years.
Other survivors include: two sons, Dr. Eric Scowden (and wife, Nancy) of Paducah, KY; Craig Scowden of Linville, NC; one daughter, Lori Scowden Varn (and husband Fred) of Tallahassee; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Hiram and Helene Whiting and her brother Roy Whiting.
