BELMONT — Clara Lee Whitener Atkins, 84, died July 25, 2007 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC.
She was a native of Gainesville, GA, daughter of the late Doyle Whitener and Annie Pearl Jordan.
INTERMENT: Evergreen Cemetery
She was an active member of Unity Baptist Church for over 55 years; where she especially enjoyed working with the children of the church. She was a billing clerk for over 15 years with Michelle Textiles and later became self-employed with Atkins Catering Service. She was known all over the region for her homestyle cooking and won the "Best Food in The District Award" for the Belmont Rotary Club in 1992.
SURVIVORS: Sons & daughters-in-law: Thomas J, & Donna Miller Atkins, Jr., Danny Ray & Pamela Horne Atkins, Richard B. "Dickie" & Paulette Wentz Atkins, Johnny D. Atkins, Terry L. & DeeDee Ramsey Atkins, Christopher M. "Chris" & Connie Rhyne Atkins, Jack B. & Jill Ramsey Atkins all of Belmont, Joseph D. "Joe" & Anne Bradley Atkins of Winston-Salem; brothers and sister in law, Kenneth B. Whitener of Belmont and Mildred Harold & Margaret Whitener of Marion; sisters and brother in law, Nellie & Jerry McGinnis of Goldsboro and Edith Belcher of Cherryville; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
