Mary Alice White Abell, 72, wife 49 years of Dr. F. Erwin Abell, died March 4, 2011 at the Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood. She was a daughter of the late Bruce & Mary Alice Marshall White.

Mrs. Abell was a graduate of Chester High School and a 1960 graduate of Lander College where she was elected May Queen during her senior year. She taught in the public schools of Savannah, GA and Richmond, VA.

A member and former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, she also served as a Sunday school teacher, as President of the Women of the Church, Interim Director of Christian Education, and was elected a life member of Presbyterian Women.

She was also a member of the Laurel Garden Club and had formerly served on the Board of Directors of St. Nicholas Speech & Hearing School and the Greenwood YMCA.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by their children, Mark (Kris) Abell, Greenwood, Alice (Mike) Morgan, Birmingham, AL, Stuart (Karen) Abell, Laurens, & Mary Fran (Paul) Crook, Ruston, LA; grandchildren, Leslie & Kel Abell, Clay & Mary Erwin Henderson, Sarah Alice Morgan, Lleyton & Griffin Abell, George, CeCe, & Bryant Crook.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 7, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. David Mayo & Rev. Dr. George Wilson officiating.

Pallbearers were C.W. Mulkey, Robert Davis, Bob Erwin, W.B. McCown, Dr. James Padgett, Bob Roddey, Henry Reynolds, & Dr. Walter Bishop.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 426, Greenwood, SC 29648, The Lander University Foundation, 320 Stanley Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29649, or to the charity of one's choice.
