YOUNG DRIVER ADMITS RUNNING STOP SIGN AFTER WOMAN DIES OF INJURIES IN TRAFFIC CRASH
Davenport's auto fatality toll for 1949 stood at five Saturday following the death of Mrs. Helen White, 73, of 1414 Grand avenue, of injuries received in a two-car collision at East Fourteenth and LeClaire streets.
Mrs. White was fatally injured at 10 p.m. Friday, when a car driven by her son, Charles E. White, of the same address, collided with an auto operated by Alan Draper, 17, of 927 West Sixteenth street.
The elderly lady, who was thrown into the street following the collision, died about four hours later in St. Luke's hospital.
A charge of reckless driving was filed against young Draper, a student at Davenport high school. He admitted to police he failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection. Police said the youth was traveling north on LeClaire street and White east on Fourteenth street at the time of the collision.
White's wife, who was riding in the front seat with him and his mother, also fell into the street. She escaped with minor bruises, however. Both drivers were unhurt. A passenger in young Draper's car was Rowland Saling, 15, of 1009 West Fourteenth street, who also escaped injury.
An inquest is being held by Coroner Roy McGinnis for 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the police courtroom at city hall.
A native of Chicago, Mrs. White was born May 22, 1876 and had lived in Davenport for the last 53 years. Her husband to whom she was married October 3, 1896, in Yates City, Ill., preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Charles E. White, Davenport, and Jack W. White, Grand Mound, Ia., a daughter, Mrs. Robert Hurlbutt, Davenport; two brothers, Clinton L. Ewing, Douglas, Ill., and Edward Ewing, Kewanee, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, in the Runge chapel, followed by burial in Memorial Park cemetery.
