NEWPORT NEWS - Joan White Thomas, 73, of Newport News, Va., passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011, after a short illness.
A loving mother and grandmother, Joan was born in Onancock on the eastern shore of Virginia on April 27, 1938. Her family moved to Newport News in 1941. Joan graduated from Warwick High School with the class of 1956.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Newport News, and Circle 4. Previously a member of Noland United Methodist Church of Newport News.
She was predeceased by her husband, Avery A. Thomas; parents, Elizabeth and James C. White; and a sister, Ann W. Goodall.
She is survived by sons, James C. Post and his wife, Debbie of Gloucester, Va., S. Scott Post and wife, Susan of Newport News, Va., and Steven M. Post of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; grandsons, Selden Post of Gloucester and Scotty Post of Newport News; granddaughters, Joanna Post of Newport News and Shannon Post Wells of Hampton, Va.; and many loving friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Kimberly Schlesinger and everyone at Riverside Oncology and Riverside Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Newport News.
A visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Aug. 4, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John T. LeGault Jr. officiating followed by burial in Peninsula Memorial Park.
