Mary Elizabeth Trone White died on the 16th of December 2010 at her home in Houston, Texas. She was born to Nell Young and rancher Earl Ritchie Trone on the 1st of October 1918 in the family home in Rosenberg, Texas. When she was three years old, the family moved to Houston where she attended MacGregor Elementary School and Albert Sidney Johnston Junior High School. She graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1936. She attended the University of Mexico in Mexico City and graduated from the University of Houston in 1940 with a B. A. in Political Science. Following graduation she worked for Dorothy Knepper, Director of the San Jacinto Museum of History. Her sense of adventure, curiosity, and patriotism lead her to join the Diplomatic Service. During World War II she served in the U. S. Embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay in the Black List Department, which dealt with companies suspected of doing business with Nazi Germany. While there, she became fluent in Spanish and enthusiastically participated in local cultural affairs. Her compassionate nature led her to volunteer at the USO and the Red Cross. Upon her return to Houston she married William Blanton White in July, 1947. When the Korean War broke out, her husband was recalled to the Air Force, later deciding to become a career officer and pilot. He first was stationed in St. John's, New Foundland where Mrs. White and their two children joined him. For nearly twenty years the family lived in many places around the world, the highlight being three years in England. Mrs. White delighted in life there including living in Old Hunstanton Hall with a moat and a maze. She planned many trips to the continent and around Britain. Her joy in savoring other cultures was contagious. Following her husband's retirement, they returned to Houston. For many years they vacationed in Bermuda where she continued to enjoy the English culture. Mrs. White was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sisters, Earline Trone Larson and Dorothy Trone Howe Dupree, and by her brothers-in-law, William Andrew Larson, Knox Briscoe Howe, and Edmund Mc Ashan Dupree. Her son, William Trone White, died tragically during the same week of her death. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth White, who will miss her warmth and humor. She also is survived by her niece, Dorothy Knox Howe Houghton; her nephew, Harris Milton Howe and his wife Jane Wiley Howe; her great nieces and nephews, Rowena Woodward Houghton Dasch and her husband, Kevin; Adele Birdsall Houghton and her husband, Fernando Autrique; Knox Briscoe Howe II and Edward Alexander Howe; and by her great, great nieces, Caroline Woodward Dasch and Elizabeth Briscoe Dasch.
Friends are cordially invited to join the family at an interment service, to be conducted for both Mrs. White and her son, William Trone White, at one o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 21st of December, in the West Avenue section of Glenwood Cemetery, 2525 Washington Avenue in Houston, where Rev. Charles H. Thompson, Executive Pastor of First Methodist Church of Houston, is to officiate. In lieu of customary remembrances, and for those desiring, memorial contributions may be directed to the Coalition to Salute American Heroes, P. O. Box 96440, Washington, D.C., 20077-7184; or to the Star of Hope Mission, 6897 Ardmore St., Houston, TX, 77054.
