BALTIMORE CITY POLICE OFFICER
SHOT AND KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
Frank Whitby Jr. was a Police Officer for the Baltimore City Police Department for two years. He died in the line of duty at age 22. On April 6, 1974, he and his partner Officer Carl Grinnage responded to a home in the 1900 block of E. Lanvale Street for a report of a man firing a rifle. When they arrived on the scene, they entered the home to search for the man. The suspect suddenly jumped out of a room at the end of a hallway and opened fire, striking Officer Whitby in the thigh and stomach. Officer Whitby had been armed with a shotgun, and pushed his partner to safety. He was transpoted to Johns Hopkins Hospital where he remained for a month.On May 5, 1974 Officer Whitby died of a pulmonary infection caused by his wounds. The suspect was committed to a State Mental Institution, where he later died. Officer Whitby was survived by his wife and two daughters.
