Crash leaves Salem woman brain-dead; police seek clues—Police are seeking witnesses to a two-vehicle collision Friday that left a pregnant 23 year old woman brain-dead.
Nancy Jean Smith, of Salem, was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Salem Hospital., a nursing supervisor said. Smith's brain stem was badly damaged in the accident, and she was on a respirator, Lt Bill Kinch said. The 5 month old fetus that she was carrying died, he said.
The accident occurred about 7 a.m. when Smith's compact car, which was south bound on Broadway NE, collided with a pickup that was westbound on Pine Street NE. The driver of the pickup, Larry Damon Johnson, Silverton, was treated for minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
Johnson told police that Smith ran a red light. A witness to the accident has given a different version but may have had an obstructed view, Kinch said.
