When Henry's father died his mother took his two younger brothers to Illinois to farm and Henry moved to West Meriden, CT where he took a job in the machine shop of Foster and Merriam. In 1855 he also moved west and helped his mother farm for a year. Then he traveled to Kansas and decided on Atchison County as a good place to settle down. Once he got his mother to Kansas, and settled, he returned to Illinois where he married Harriet Merriam. They joined his mother in Atchison County in 1858 taking up 40 acres of his mother's quarter section. He improved the land and eventually added over 500 acres to his holdings.
On April 1, 1882 he purchased the retail department of Western Hardware Company in Atchison and ran the store for the following nine years. In 1890 he moved his stock to Lancaster, KS and went into business with his son Harry.
For twelve years (1872-1884) he served as Justice of the Peace and was Township Trustee for a six year term. He was active in the IOOF, the Pardee Seminary, and on the School Board. His retirement years were spent running the Lancaster Hotel, which his wife and aged mother continued for another eight years after his death.
He was a large man, weighing 275 pounds, and had "rang the bell for supper at 6 pm yesterday, twenty minutes later his body was found across the threasold of an outhouse, and life was extinct. From the position of his body, and a bruise on the back of his head, it was evident that, in leaving the outhouse, he had fallen, and that his head struck upon the sharp edge of the frame work rupturing a blood vessel."
